Scout Hut gets a facelift!

For the first time in more than two decades the exterior of the Boy Scout Hut located on Broad Street in downtown Edenton is getting a much needed update. After much discussion and planning between Pack 164, Troop 164, the Town of Edenton and the Edenton/Chowan Board of Education, renovations on the exterior of the Scout Hut began on December 27 and were completed on January 4.  The work was contracted with Taskmasters, an independent mobile wood restoration company based out of Rocky Mount, NC.

The exterior renovations consisted of media blasting the exterior of the Scout Hut which removed the old stain from the logs and prepared the wood to receive the stain. Next an oil based stain designed for log homes was applied to the logs which will help seal and protect the logs for years to come. Finally the cement-based grout that was applied to the joints between the logs known as chinking was painted. Altogether the exterior renovations took 9 days with weather ranging from sunny and warm to blistery cold and snow/rain.

A big thank you goes out to all the individuals involved in making this project a reality. The exterior renovations were the first step in ensuring that the scouts of Edenton and Chowan County have a sound meeting place for years to come. There is still a long punch list of items that need to be completed on the Scout Hut but they will all take time and money to complete but this was an essential first step.

Here are pictures of the various stages of the exterior renovations…
